Talking in the middle of the night

According to the first understanding of the Simanim for the three Mishmaros, the third mishmar begins when husbands and wives are conversing. Who has a conversation four hours before daybreak?

The gemara says that people start going to sleep at the beginning of the night so four hours before daybreak is eight hours after they went to sleep. It was a different lifestyle back then as farmers. They probably wanted to start right at daybreak so they got up early to do things around the house first. The gemara is just saying that is when some people start getting up and I could believe it.

In general though with all these zmanim, I find it difficult to understand how we could use shaos zmaniyos. What happens for people who live way up north where the night might be a few minutes (or less), is zman schiva really only from midnight until 12:03?
